Rack Unit#

Data center colocation by the rack unit, with terms as short as one month.

Simple as that.

  • Additional Ethernet ports
  • Additional 0.5 kW of power
Available locations:
    * Los Angeles, CA US
    * Silicon Valley, CA US (Coming soon!)
    * Chicago, IL US (Coming soon!)

Environmental monitoring services are included.

Physical testing services (cable, SFP, PCIe, and thermal imaging) are available.

Low-density deployments can expect SNMP and HTTP access for power control of Rack Unit devices.

Higher-density deployments can expect HTTP (Prometheus) access for power monitoring of Rack Unit devices.

Provided Hardware#

Provided Hardware is a Rack Unit option that gives customers access to hardware owned or sourced by Rolling Stock.

We currently specialize in these types of hardware:

Sourced Hardware#

Rolling Stock avoids sourcing large volumes of hardware ahead of customer demand. We can source equipment for a project or work with a vendor to make it available.

Data Plane#

The primary Rolling Stock network is designed for device management and out-of-band access. It can serve as a simple data plane, but its main purpose is to provide management access.

For customers needing more than about 40 Gbps per device across five or more devices, or more than 200 Gbps of internet access, we suggest one of two options:

BYO Data plane#

This path is required for non-Ethernet data planes such as InfiniBand, Fibre Channel, BACnet, or industrial Ethernet.

Customers can colocate their own data plane switches with their hardware, connect the devices directly to those switches, and connect each switch's management port to the primary Rolling Stock network.

Interconnects are allowed to patch directly into customer Rack Units.

BYO Data plane documentation is coming soon.

Shared Data plane#

In this option, RSL provides Ethernet data plane networking alongside the customer's hardware and manages it as a service.

Unlike the Layer 2 yard network, this data plane uses Layer 3 routing with BGP. Customers use RSL addressing and share a VRF with other customers on the data plane.

Shared Data plane documentation is coming soon.

Terms and Billing#

The standard term for Rack Units is month-to-month, with optional longer-term contracts available.

Rack Units are billed on a monthly basis.
